Pointer Descendant Part of Canal’s 100th Anniversary

The Washington Post on June 2, 1928 carried a picture of George Pointer descendant Mary Moten as part of its coverage of the C&O Canal’s centennial celebration. At the time, she was 73 and lived at 5803 Broad Branch Road in Chevy Chase DC on land that had been in her family for 80 years. The land was to be taken by eminent domain later that same year to construct Lafayette Park and School. Mary Moten was the daughter of Mary Ann Plummer Harris, who piloted President John Quincy Adams up the Potomac Canal on its groundbreaking on July 4, 1828. See the actual story and picture here.
