Interactive Kit-House Map Identifies Nearly 100 in Chevy Chase DC

Catarina Bannier
Catarina Bannier

Local Realtor and kit house expert Catarina Bannier has created an interactive map identifying catalogue houses in Chevy Chase DC. The houses, most of which were built between 1915 and 1932, are well-preserved today, she states, because they were exceptionally well constructed with quality materials.

Chevy Chase DC is remarkable in both the density and quality of kit houses, she said. She has authenticated nearly 100 of them in 61 different models in the 20015 area code. They were produced by four manufacturers: Sears Roebuck & Co., Lewis Manufacturing Co., International Mill & Lumber (also known as Sterling), and Gordon-Van Tine. For more information, Catarina produces a kit-house newsletter. Register for it by clicking on the map site link above.

Across Western Avenue in Chevy Chase, MD, a four-month investigation authenticating kit houses was performed by Kathryn Holt Springston. You can read about her project in the Fall 2017 Chevy Chase Historical Society newsletter.
